ROQ is a business with real sense of community, from the relationships we form with our colleagues, to the sense of belonging in the communities we live and work within. This is built in to the culture at ROQ and manifests in different ways, from various types of charity work and initiatives, to supporting local schools, colleges and universities.
We consider ourselves fortunate to be in a fast-paced industry with an abundance of opportunities on offer. As such, we’re passionate about giving something back and making a difference where we can, so we encourage our team to engage in fundraising activities and community-based volunteer work.
We take part in a wide range of activities that engender a strong team ethos and a common purpose, and it’s not about how much money we donate, but the spirit in which we engage. As well as company initiatives throughout the year, we run a charity matching scheme to encourage employees to work creatively in raising money for good causes of their choice.
During a difficult year for all of us, we’ve continued to do as much as we can within our community, hosting virtual events and doing our bit for charity.
Before the UK lockdown, we started the year with a bang by partaking in RED January, in which we aim to walk 10,000 steps each day in January and ROQ makes a charitable donation to Lancashire Mind for each person that achieves certain step targets. We also managed to start a crisp packet recycling scheme, partake in MacMillan’s Game Heroes and raffle off a hamper for a local hospice, all before March!
Naturally, things slowed down slightly with the introduction of Covid-19, with a number of events being postponed or cancelled entirely. However, it couldn’t dampen ROQ spirits completely, and we’ve since seen virtual marathons ran, step counts smashed and moustaches grown all in the name of charity! As well as raising awareness for Children in Need, enduring another 24 hour gaming marathon and hosting a virtual introduction to testing for over 70 college and university students.
The final piece of the ROQ community 2020 jigsaw is our annual Christmas donation, which in the past has seen donations such as toys to children’s charities, pyjamas to women’s refuges and sleeping bags to the homeless. This year, we were lucky enough to find Stand4Socks, an amazing company that produces ethically made novelty socks, and donates a pair of specially engineered anti-bacterial socks to the homeless for every pair bought from the website. This fantastic idea has meant that each ROQ employee has been able to receive a Christmas gift from ROQ as well as us contributing to the 70,000 pairs of socks that Stand4Socks have donated this year alone!
In 2021, as we hope to see a return to normality, there’s no doubt that ROQ colleagues will continue to do everything we can for our community! As always, we will be starting the year right with our annual RED January attempts, so if I see you about while I’m walking or running (probably walking…), please feel free to stop me for a chat and ask me about whatever ROQ’s latest community endeavours may be!
