Smarter windows updates: how our client cut disruption and saved 60 hours a week

Frequent Windows 10 and Office 365 updates were disrupting productivity, frustrating users, and increasing support demand for our client - a leading global law firm. Our client is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious law firms, operating in over 30 countries with thousands of legal and business professionals. They are known for combining deep legal expertise with cutting-edge innovation to serve a global client base. 

THE CLIENT CHALLENGE 

The client’s previous approach to regular software updates was causing significant disruption across its global business. Key challenges included: 

  • Frequent updates (5–6 per month) led to repeated reboots and user frustration. 

  • Performance issues, such as MS Word taking 30+ seconds to load, affected productivity and revenue. 

  • High IT support volumes from recurring update-related issues. 

  • A lack of structure or automation, leading to risk of disruption with each release. 

WHAT WE DELIVERED 

Through our ongoing Managed Service solution, Roq implemented a sustainable blueprint for ongoing Windows 10 and Office 365 updates — reducing impact, increasing quality, and improving user confidence: 

  • Introduced a monthly cumulative update strategy, categorising deployments by impact (e.g., reboot-required, silent install). 

  • Built a BDD-formatted Test Automation Framework, allowing core application regression to be run automatically with each update. 

  • Deployed End-Point Performance Monitoring, tracking application load times before and after updates to detect and prevent issues in real time.
